US unlocked Samsung Galaxy Note 8 now receiving Android Oreo

It’s been a long road for Samsung Galaxy Note 8 owners waiting to receive the Android Oreo update. The Galaxy Note 8 was released in September with Android 7.1 Nougat, and it has taken Samsung six months to deliver the Android 8.0 Oreo update. The phone comes in two variants: the Qualcomm Snapdragon 835 variant of the Galaxy Note 8 is sold in the US and China, while the Exynos 8895 international variant is sold in the rest of the world.

The Exynos variant of the Galaxy Note 8 was the first to receive the update (If you haven’t received the update, you can follow our guide to update manually). The carrier variants of the Galaxy Note 8 in the US then received the update, starting with AT&T, followed by Verizon and Sprint, finishing with T-Mobile. Owners of the US unlocked Galaxy Note 8 variant had still been waiting for the Android Oreo update, but this changes now as the update is finally rolling out to owners of the US unlocked Galaxy Note 8.

The reason why the US unlocked variant of the Galaxy Note 8 is receiving the update later than the carrier variants was explained by Samsung last week. The company stated that the procedure for updating a carrier variant of the device was to develop the firmware and then send it to the carrier. The carrier then tests the update and releases it on its own.

On the other hand, the procedure is different for the unlocked variant. Samsung needs to develop the firmware and every carrier that supports the update needs to test it. This means that Verizon, AT&T, T-Mobile and other carriers all need to test the same update. This can cause delays if an issue is found with one carrier.
