Moto X4 “Android One” Render Leaked

A few days ago, Xiaomi launched the Mi A1 — its first device in recent years that did not run MIUI. Instead, the Xiaomi Mi A1 was part of the rejuvenated Android One program, receiving guaranteed update directly from Google. While the phone comes with Android 7.1.2 Nougat out-of-the-box, it will be updated to Android Oreo before the end of this year; and will be among the first devices to receive Android P when that releases publicly.

During the launch event, Google’s Global Director of Android Partner Programs, Mr. Jon Gold, mentioned that Android One will be expanded across many OEMs and across price brackets. The Android One program will grow from the idea of providing stock Android devices in the super budget range to bringing the stock Android experience and Google’s guaranteed updates to a wider variety of hardware and price ranges. The Xiaomi Mi A1 was the first device in this new edition of the program, launching at thrice the price of the first Android One device!

The next Android One program partner will reportedly be Lenovo through its Motorola brand. According to a leak from Evan Blass, the next Android One device will be based off the newly launched Moto X4.

While Evan did not mention anything beyond the render of the device, we can gauge the rest of the specs from the Moto X4. The Moto X4 comes with a 5.2″ 1080p display, a Qualcomm Snapdragon 630 SoC, 3GB RAM, 32GB of expandable storage and a 3,000 mAh battery to power it all. The phone supports TurboPower quick charging, and comes with IP68 certification for water and dust resistance.

A big advantage for the Moto X4 in its price bracket is its dual rear camera setup, which is comprised of a 12MP standard shooter with dual-pixel autofocus and f/2.0 aperture. The other camera is an 8MP wide-angle shooter with a 120-degree field of view and f/2.2 aperture, while the front camera is a 16MP shooter.

The Moto X4 retails in Europe for €399 (~$480/₹30,750). The specifications and pricing for the Android One device are unknown, but if it does indeed inherit the Moto X4’s design and specifications, we can expect a similar price point. Given Google’s recent announcement at the Indian Mi A1 launch event, an “expensive” Android One device is not out of the picture. It will be interesting to see how Lenovo plans to market the Moto X4 Android One device alongside the regular Moto X4, considering that Motorola’s UX is close to stock Android anyways.
