Earlier, we reported that Huawei was working on a new Android Wear smartwatch and that it would be unveiled at MWC 2017. Now, we have an official confirmation on the matter. The company’s CEO, Richard Yu, confirmed on the Chinese micro-blogging site Weibo that the company will launch new smartwatch hardware running Android Wear 2.0 at MWC 2017. Dubbed the Huawei Watch 2, the device is a successor to the original Huawei Watch, which was launched back in 2015.
Mr. Yu posted an image of a man wearing sports watch on his official Weibo account yesterday with a tagline “Made For Free Spirit,” hinting to a sporty watch. Unfortunately, the post didn’t reveal the other specifications of the Watch 2. Although, previous rumors show the Watch 2 will likely come with SIM support to make and receive phone calls on the watch and have access to your carrier’s wireless network.
The Watch 2 will join the likes of the LG Watch Style and Watch Sport, which was announced just last week, and are the first to come running Android Wear 2.0 software out-of-the-box.
Apart from Huawei, Chinese OEM ZTE is also reportedly working on its first ever Android Wear watch, though given that it’s still under development, it’s less likely to be launched at MWC.
MWC 2017 officially kicks off on February 26th so we’re just a few weeks away before we learn more about Huawei’s latest Android Wear watch.
