Android 7.0 Nougat Lands on the OnePlus 3 Via Unofficial CyanogenMod 14

With the OnePlus 3 being a developer friendly device, it was bound to happen sooner or later. While OnePlus is busy merging its teams and working to build a stable build of Nougat for the average OnePlus 3 user, the above-average power users that frequent our forums can find a piece of the latest dessert without all the wait.

There have been a few Android 7.0 Nougat builds floating around for the OnePlus 3, but most of these raised a few flags like having no verifiable source code or being of shady origin. But now, we have a build that is from a good source and that other users in the forums have tried as well.

XDA Senior Member Taker18‘s Unofficial CyanogenMod 14 build for the OnePlus 3, compiled from the official CyanogenMod sources gives users a good look at Nougat on the device. Since this is an early WIP build, there are several major important features that are not working, which will make it difficult for people to adopt it as their prime daily driver.

Whats not working:

  • Camera
  • Call
  • Alert Slider
  • Dash Charge
  • Possibly more

Other forum users have praised the ROM and detailed all the features that work and do not. Battery life is stated to be horrendous, along with issues with poor thermals. Installation of APK’s from local sources does not work, launchers other than Trebuchet do not work, there are frequent slowdowns…the list goes on for a while.

But on the bright side, it is Nougat on the OnePlus 3. You can try out the new official Multiwindow and the new quick settings pane, and take a look at the fancy new animations. And you can do all that now, without waiting for the OEM to bring it to you.

Long story short, it is recommended that you have a full nandroid backup of your primary ROM before you make the jump, since there’s a good chance you might want to return to something more stable.

If you would like to try out the Unofficial CyanogenMod 14 build on the OnePlus 3, head on over to the forum thread.
