What Google Missed on the Nexus 5x and Nexus 6P – XDA TV

Google finally announced Its new 2016 Lineup of Nexus Devices. Today I want to talk to you guys about the new Nexus 6P and 5X. Both Devices come in with the latest Android OS (Marshmallow). By the end of the announcement show, I was left confused about some things that they covered and did not cover during the show. This is TK and  Let’s Talk about Nexus News this week, on XDA TV.

1.Wireless Charging.

In the past few years of the Nexus line of devices that Google has released, two features always existed. NFC and wireless charging, with the recent announcement of the Nexus 6P and 5X,  one of these two features seems to be missing. You guessed it, it’s wireless charging.

Now during a recent AMA the Nexus Team said that the plan was to double down on USB Type C  with fast charging and to keep the design thin, is that fair compromise?

I have used Wireless charging for years now. I was really happy this year when Samsung finally started to have fast wireless charging, talking what google started to the next level. So the decision to go with design over function on a Nexus, made me wonder did they make the right compromise.

2. 16GB of Storage.

The Nexus 5X starts with a 16 gigabyte model… yes that’s 16 gigabytes of storage. I understand that this is a reference model for developers but the fact of the matter is you won’t have access to 16 gigs once you get the device, it will be more like 12 gigabytes if not less. The base model of the 5X start at 379 — $10 more and you can get a 64GB OnePlus 2. Now I understand that the 5X will have marshmallow more consistent updates, but for day to day usage, 64 gigs trumps 16 gigs any day, and being able to get it for 10 dollars more just ain’t right. We need to stop offering 16 gigs as an option for any device that is coming out be it in Nexus or an iPhone.

3. No OIS.

The Nexus 6P stands for Nexus 6 “Premium”, and they talked about how the camera is better than the iPhone’s camera and that of the Nexus 6 from last year with the new larger 1.55um pixel sensor. Both the Nexus 6 and the iPhone have OIS, so why would you make a better sensor and take the one thing that will help you get great pictures out of it? Nexus devices need OIS because we really do not get a lot of power in our Google camera app that comes with our devices. To take a good picture I will need to depend on smartburst and hope the clear shot is what I was I was trying to capture. Google: that’s just not the right compromise, OIS compliments the camera, bring it back next year please.

4. Fast Charging USB Type C.

During the announcement we heard that we will get fast charging on the 5X and 6P, but what we did not hear is that they have different charging rates. What I mean is you put the Nexus 5X and the 6P on the charger for 10 minutes the 6P will charge faster than the 5X. I noticed that while looking at the spec sheet on Google’s site. 10 minutes of charging on the Nexus 5X will get you about 3.8 hours of usage but the Nexus 6P will get about 7 hours. Why make the 5X slower when you give it fast charging to start with? Last thing: we have USB 2.0 here not 3.0, so transfer speeds are about the same as before.

5. QualComm CPUs

The QualComm 810 V2.1 CPU has been out for some time now, and does not have the best reputation, most of the rumors of the 6P talked about the 820 being used, but I guess the 820 was not ready yet. So the decision to go with 2 CPUs that have been out since early this year, makes me wonder… I mean, they could have released the devices at I/O with the first version of Marshmallow for testing. why wait till now?

I have a OnePlus 2 and it has the same QC 810 CPU as the Nexus 6P and guys, it does warm up… and with a metal body you will feel it. So a case will be needed for sure. I agree it’s the best CPU we have right now, but my hope is that Marshmallow better do a great job at keeping the system running smooth. enough said about that.

Conclusion

My Video today came from a long time Nexus user and Android enthusiast’s point of view. I realize that Google is releasing a budget Nexus and a Premium Nexus. the Nexii of 2016 will surely do well, and make Google proud. I am still very happy overall with the new hardware and hope to get some hands-on time with them in the near future. So what do you guys think?
