At their IFA announcement, Sony took the wraps off the Xperia Z5 Flagship trio: the Xperia Z5, the Xperia Z5 Compact, and the Xperia Z5 Premium.

Starting with the first differentiating factor amongst these is the screen size. The Xperia Z5 comes along with a 5.2″ 1080p IPS display. The Xperia Z5 Compact comes with a 4.6″ 720p IPS panel, while the Xperia Z5 Premium comes with a whooping 5.5″ 4K IPS LCD screen. Next up, the Xperia Z5 and the Xperia Z5 Premium feature 3GB of RAM, while the Xperia Z5 Compact packs in 2GB of RAM. With regards battery, the Xperia Z5 comes with a 2930 mAh battery, while the Xperia Z5 Compact comes with a 2700 mAh battery and the Xperia Z5 Premium comes with a large 3430 mAh battery to power that glorious display.

The rest of the features and specifications are shared amongst the devices, making it easy to choose between the three. The Z5 trio sports Qualcomm’s Snapdragon 810 chipset along with an Adreno 430 GPU. With regards storage, the devices come with a standard 32GB internal storage model with a micro-sd card slot that supports an additional 200GB, which would come in really handy for the Z5 Premium (in order to enjoy high-resolution media without capacity worries). All three phones are IP68 certified for dust and water resistance. The Z5 Trio also supports Quick Charge 2.0 which is a plus point considering that they come with non-removable batteries. The phones will come with Android 5.1.1 out of the box, but you can expect an Android 6.0 Marshmallow release soon.

Sony also placed great emphasis on the camera capabilities of the devices. The sensors used in the trio is a brand new Sony 1/2.3 Exmor RS sensor along with F2.0 G Lens, promising better low-light photography and an overall improvement in picture quality. The devices also claim to be possessing the world’s fastest autofocus capabilities, with speeds of just 0.037 seconds required for focus. The rear camera captures images at 23MP while the front is a 5.1MP shooter with 1080p video recording capabilities.

The phones also come with NFC. The Xperia Z5 and Z5 Premium will also be available in dual-SIM variants in addition to single SIM variants.

As far as color choices go, the Xperia Z5 will come in White, Graphite Black, Gold and Green. The Xperia Z5 Compact will come in White, Graphite Black, Yellow and Coral. Both of these and their colors will launch globally in October 2015.

Xperia_Z5_+_Colour_RangeSony’s Z5 lineup is certainly very interesting, ticking all the right boxes except for the processor. What we need to wait and see is how the mega-flagship Z5 Premium performs under intense pressure. Will the Z5 trio also get burnt from the Snapdragon’s fiery breath? Only time, and a hands-on will tell.

According to Sony’s website, the Xperia Z5 is priced at £599.00. Prices for the Premium and Compact versions of the Z5 are unavailable as of this writing.

What do you think about the Sony Xperia Z trio? Will any of them be worthy of being THE smartphone of 2015? Let us know your thoughts in the comments below!
