Lately, many people have been noticing a bug that happens when they start Google Maps’ navigation mode via a voice command. Once they’re done, they will press the home button, but then find the Google Maps application will randomly launch at a later point and attempt to resume the process. We’re seeing reports about this issue from people who own the Nexus 6P, Nexus 5X, Nexus 5, Moto X, Moto Z Play, LG G4 and many, many more.
These reports are coming from people within the community who are running Android 7.1.1, Android 6.0, stock firmware from their OEMs as well as custom ROMs from the community. So this bug looks to be widespread, it’s not tied to a specific smartphone, and it’s not tied to a specific version of Android either. Some are saying it could be a bug with Google Now though since it’s generally activated with a voice command (although this has not been proven).
The original poster of the thread, XDA Junior Member hideous, says clearing the Google Maps application out of the recents page does not prevent the application from launching again at a later point in time. Diving into the Settings application and then force closing Google Maps from the application section though does seem to prevent it from opening up again. However, once the application is manually opened again then it will instantly try to resume the randomly opening issue that so many people are reporting.
XDA Senior Member milkyway3 has a tip that involves downloading the Task Killer application from the Play Store (presumably this one, although they didn’t link to it in the thread). Once installed, they say to add all applications to the ignore list except for Google Maps. Set this application to auto kill the Google Maps application every 15 seconds and that should proactively stop the application from opening again at random. Hardly a convenient workaround, though.
